melanie, the university lecturer

friday, 17 february 2006 19:05 MAT

i guess today is one of my last “days off”. i got offered a full-time 12-month contract with cqu teaching maths. i am muchly excited. they have asked me to teach subjects i really like and have tutored before, so that’s good.

for term 1, they tell me that i will be doing math 11246 - qma – quantitative methods a and math 20247 - qm – quantitative methods. they are the same subject content but the titles are different because they qualify for different degrees. basically they are a business maths subject. qma is for the undergraduate degree. qm is for the masters by coursework degree.

the timetable of when i’m meant to be lecturing and tutoring is a bit wonkie at this stage, but i’m sure it will be cleared up after next week when i actually have everything sorted and official enrolment numbers are finalised.

the academic calendar for 2006 says that term 1 starts on monday, 6 march, 2006 and finishes friday, 2 june, 2006. review week is the following week and exam week ends friday, 23 june, 2006.

for term 2, they tell me that i will be doing qm for all international campuses, in addition to campuses in australia.

they want me to do something for term 3, but the exact subject is yet to be decided.

now, when i say that i'm "doing" these subjects, it is still not clear to me exactly what my role is. mostly i will be lecturing and running the tutorials. course coordination was in consideration, but still remains to be seen. of course, along with all that, it is given that there is marking of assignments and exams.

being full-time means i get an office, pigeon hole, telephone, key, computer, network access, and am required to be on campus every day. i am also expected to turn up to faculty, school, and staff meetings. i problie get my photo taken and put on the faculty web page and on the notice board too. all next week i have various new staff gatherings… new staff orientation, health and safety induction, welcome morning teas, etc etc. fun, fun, fun!!

as to what i get paid, i am a lecturer on a b1 salary level. exactly what amount that is, i don’t know yet. i’m not that fussie at this stage. i’m just glad to have consistent full-time work for this year. yay! i’ll find out more in the next few weeks and certainly have a steep learning curve of university meanderings in the coming months.

as with anything university related, i must make this disclaimer... this is all the information that i know as of now, things are expectedly subject to change. *sigh*

does the family like him?

tuesday, 14 february, 2006 09:10 MAT

three years ago today, i made brett take me out on our first date. he's managed to allow me to hang around ever since. i hope to continue for a long time. i think the family likes him. if not, i like this one. dad hasn't chopped his head off yet. i take this as a good sign.
